Tim White-Sobieski, "On the Wing", 2003

Tim White’s video "On The Wing" is an organic development and continuation of his philosophical and highly intellectual video projects. Only 12 minutes long, this work shows a life-size spectrum of balancing between the spirituality and sensuous, empiric exploration of being. Two dimensions are melted into a whistling flight on the wing: the realm of pure thought, non-material, infinite, immeasurable, and perfect; and the realm of the physical universe, material, finite, measurable, and with imperfections. It is easy to take off - in his imagination - watching seamless ascending of the waves into the skies and/or fearless descent of the cosmic winds into the fierce waters held down by gravity.

So it goes in Tim White’s work: howling winds dive into the depth of the "sea of life"; strenuous move of the water element accumulates perpetually growing desire to escape - and throws it to the shore. Then, there appears a heroine of Tim White’s other video works – young girl impersonating many aspects of his philosophy. She stood in the middle of Cathedral as a teenage Empress in "Confession"; her face floated above the snow in the "Path, or First Love"; she became a figure of Christ at the video "Last Supper" from the project "Before They Were "Beatles". She is ever present in the artist’s idea of transitions in life.

She sips slowly… She sips from that tiny cup containing her whole life – slowly and absently, like in a life nobody has lived yet. She is not Venus stepping out of the sea foam, she is only an impersonation of a dream, hope and belief.

It takes a life span - to hesitate for a fraction of a moment, then slow down and reflect on what you have lived through. The step after step is hard, but not the whole journey. There is a light in everyone’s memories that enlightens simple pleasures of living, and the artist reflects on growing older as the act of returning home, returning to his own self.

"On The Wing" is about simple things in life – second after second neatly piled up in a maturing mind. Apparently, this work could not have been created by the artist ten or even five years ago, it took a long spiral road to the top - to collect all the reflections of growing up and letting emotions go freely on the wings of the element of love.

Interpolation and unity of air and water in "On The Wing" symbolize that giant molecule where everything begins and ends, where the laws of departure and arrival at life and death are the same, and the survival skills are of unprecedented importance. On a sole wing of talent the art comes to an unbalanced state of mind, but life experiences of the artist have built up a cathedral of love for mere existence. So, the most perfect balance White finds in the wind of memories thrown and stirred into the momentum of the future he is facing now.

Tim White’s recent projects - "Terminal" (videos "Day at the Terminal", "Terminal at Night" and "Terminal at last"), "On The Wing" and others from the series of films are united by the same aesthetics and philosophical ideas.

Hauptwerke dieser Tim White-Ausstellung sind die Videoreihen „Terminal I-III" (2000-2003, Musik Brian Eno/Peter Schwalm) und der Folgefilm „On The Wing" (2003, Musik Brian Eno), die bereits im Programm zahlreicher internationaler Filmfestivals und Museen zu sehen waren. Großformatige Stills (Standfotos) aus den Videos ergänzen die Show.

Terminal, eine Serie von drei Ein-Kanal-Videos, handelt von Übergängen in unserem Leben (transitions). Schauplatz ist der Flughafen, von White gewählt als Metapher für Orte und Zustände des Übergangs, sowohl emotional wie auch physisch.
Die Maschinen an diesem Ort, die Flugzeuge, stehen für Kraft und Energie, aber auch für Unsicherheit und kritischen Momente in unserem Leben.

Terminal I/Day At The Airport zeigt Charles de Gaulle bei Tag, abwechselnd mit abstrakten Animationen, die Meereswellen ähneln.

Terminal II/Flight In The Night entstand im Eindruck der September 2001-Ereignisse in New York und enthält Aufnahmen der Subway-Station Cortland unter dem World Trade Center. Die Luftaufnahmen über New York entstanden wenige Tage nach dem 11. September – der Titel Terminal erhielt eine weitere Bedeutung. Den historischen Bezugspunkten zum Trotz entstand ein Film von lyrischer, friedlicher Ästhetik.

Terminal III/Terminal At Last, das letzte Projekt der Reihe, ist stärker der Videokomposition und –bearbeitung gewidmet und von einer Reihe technischer Neuerungen in der Animation geprägt.

Der vierte und jüngste Film der Ausstellung, Tim Whites On The Wing (Im Flug), ist die Weiterentwicklung seiner philosophischen und hochintellektuellen Videoprojekte und mit ihnen durch die gleichen ästhetischen Ideen verbunden. Nur 12 Minuten lang zeigt diese Arbeit ein weites Spektrum zwischen Spiritualität und Sinnlichkeit, die beiden Dimensionen verschmelzen im Schwirren der Flügel im Flug. Der Film handelt von den einfachen Dingen des Lebens, von Reife, Gleichgewicht und Freiheit. Interpolation und Einheit von Luft und Wasser in „On The Wing" symbolisieren ein Riesenmolekül, in dem alles beginnt und endet, und Abschied und Ankunft dieselben sind.

Alle Filme basieren auf digitalem Videoformat, zeigen aber stand-alone Loop-Animationen, aufgenommen auf DVD. Verwendet wurden Non-Video-Animations-Techniken, die fertigen Filme enthalten analoges und digitales Material.

Die Hintergrundmusik stammt von Brian Eno (On The Wing) bzw. Brian Eno/Peter Schwalm (Terminal).

Tim White arbeitet in einer Vielzahl künstlerischer Disziplinen (Malerei, Fotografie, Skulptur, Video). International bekannt wurde White mit seinen Experimentalfilmen/-videos, in denen er abstrakte und gegenständliche Elemente beeindruckend kombiniert. Einzel- und Gruppenausstellungen u. a.: Museo de Bellas Artes de Santander, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, The California Film Institute, Museum of Contemporary Art in Santiago de Compostela A Coruña, Akademie der Künste Berlin, Prager Biennale, Photo España, und Hong Kong International Film Festival.
